Q: What is Bike To Build?
A: Bike To Build is the first ever Bicycle Tour sponsored by Habitat for Humanity of Scotland County. The bicycle routes have been designed to tour Scotland County in increments of 10, 22 and 30 miles as well as a Century Tour (103 Kilometers).

A: Bike To Build is a tour not a race. Bicyclers of all skill levels are encouraged to participate.

Q: Why is Habitat sponsoring a bicycle tour?
A: To raise awareness of Habitat for Humanity in Scotland County and as a fundraiser for the organization. To build homes for families in need of safe, affordable housing.

Q: Since the event starts in the morning are there local hotel accommodations if I want to come the night before?

Q: Do I have to be an experienced bicycle rider to ride?
A: No. Bicyclers of all skill level are encouraged to participate. If you are not an experienced rider you may want to familiarize yourself with typical bicycle etiquette, which will help keep you safe and ensure an enjoyable biking experience.
To help you feel more comfortable and prepare for Bike To Build the following is a list of tips and courtesies that you may wish to follow and things you may see experienced riders do:
Suggestions
- Wear helmets
- Use the buddy system and ride with others
- Obey all traffic laws (yielding right of way, stopping for lights and stop signs)
- Ride on the right side of road (with traffic) close to burm or white striping
- Ride in single file with groups of riders
- May attach a mirror to helmet or bicycle to see approaching cars
- Experienced rider behavior
- Yell 'Clear' - when an intersection is clear
- Yell 'Car up' - when a car is approaching
- Yell 'Car back' - when a car is approaching from the rear (this is definitely the time to single file up so that cars may pass, and if the road is clear ahead wave the car around).
- Yell 'On your right/left' - when a rider approaching from the rear is going to pass you on that side (hold steady until rider passes).
- Yell 'Braking' - when riders are slowing down
- Be alert and observant - a rider pointing to the ground means there is debris or a pothole coming up.
- Be alert and observant - a rider pointing palm of hand back to you means the rider ahead is slowing down.

Q: Do I have to wear a helmet?
A: Yes. North Carolina State Law requires all children 12 and under to wear helmets for bicycle riding. In the interest of participant safety Habitat for Humanity of Scotland County requires that all Bike To Build participants wear helmets.

Q: Is there an age restriction?
A: Participants of all ages are welcome. There is no formal age restriction to participate. Youth under 16 must be accompanied by an adult, and youth under 18 must have a parent or guardian sign their waiver and release.

Q: About how many riders will there be?
A: Last year the event drew over 140 riders from out-of-town and Scotland County. Participant numbers for this yearís event are expected to increase to about 150-200.

Q: Can a group register together as a team?
A: Yes. A group of four or more people can register as a team and receive the team registration rate. Each team member should write their team name and the number of riders on their registration form. So, put your team together today! Good sources for teams are families, church groups, co-workers, friends, etc.

Q: How many different routes are there, and where are they?
A: There are four mapped routes that offer different levels of skill for participants to choose from. Each route is within Scotland County, and some parts of each route have common points.

- Tour of Argylle (51 km)
- Tour of Lorne (34 km)
- Wee Tour (17 km)

Q: Are there historical points-of-interest along the routes?
A: Yes. Each route explores a different part of Scotland County, including the scenic Lumber River and even high points of interest such a crossing the path of Shermanís March to the Sea during the Civil War. On event day each rider will receive a route specific historical sheet, detailing point-of-interest for each route. General historical information about each route is also provided on this website.

Q: Can I have a map of the routes?
A: To ensure your safety and the integrity of the tour routes, and to allow for last minute route adjustments, maps of each route are not provided. On event day each rider will receive a route specific que sheet with detailed directions that include information regarding rest stops, snacks and sag vehicle service. Additionally, each route is clearly marked with road markings over the course of the whole route.

Q: How will money be raised?
A: Bicyclers will be required to pay a registration fee. They will also be encouraged to raise $100.00 or more in individual sponsorships. The majority of the funds will be raised through corporate sponsorships.

Q: What will the money raised be used for?
A: The money raised will be used to support Habitat for Humanity of Scotland County's home building program.

Q: If I ride in this event is it necessary for me to raise money?
A: You are strongly encouraged to raise at least $100.00, but it is not required. Getting individual rider sponsorships is the best way that individual riders can bike to build with Habitat. Prizes and recognition will be given to those raising the most money.

Q: Who can become a corporate sponsor for this event?
A: Any business, industry, club, group or individual that is interested in contributing a corporate sponsorship for Bike To Build to benefit Habitat for Humanity of Scotland County may do so. Participation is not limited in that respect. If you would like a more information regarding how to become a corporate sponsor please contact the Habitat office at info@biketobuild.org.

Q: If I become a corporate sponsor of this event, what will I receive in return?
A: Sponsors names will be displayed by level on all Bike To Build advertisement, including the event t-shirt, the event banner and the Bike To Build website. Flyers will be sent to bicycle shops and bicycle clubs throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
